Looking beyond your local market – the ins and outs of regional expansion (Kuala Lumpur Meetup)

Recent times have seen Malaysians startups developing an insatiable appetite in the region. Companies such as MOL Global and Soft Space have already established a strong presence in various countries across Southeast Asia, and are reaping the benefits. Expansion, it seems, is key to the success of a company, but fraught with many difficulties. Fledging startups, in particular, often find themselves clueless as to how to go about it.

That is why Tech in Asia, in partnership with MaGIC, are bringing together a group of startups – Carousell, Soft Space, and Uber – to discuss the best practices and challenges faced when it comes to regional expansion at our Tech in Asia Meetup in Kuala Lumpur. While Soft Space and Uber have both achieved a measure of success in reaching countries across Southeast Asia, Carousell is just beginning its journey. Put together, the respective companies will no doubt have much to share from their experiences.

Hazel Hassan, VP of marketing and strategic partnership from Cradle, will be moderating this discussion. Here are some of the points which will be covered:

- What Carousell is doing to increase its presence in Southeast Asia

Speaker profile: Marcus Tan, Carousell


Marcus is a co-founder of Carousell, a mobile-first marketplace. He is a self-taught designer and leads Design & Community. He left Oracle after a year in business development consulting to start Carousell. He studied Business Administration at National University of Singapore and, as part of the university’s overseas college program, he interned in the product team at Wikinvest (now SigFig). That was when he fell madly in love with design and technology, and came back inspired to start something meaningful. Previously he also interned at Yahoo, Coca-Cola, and a few other digital agencies in his semester holidays to learn the ropes of marketing and creative execution. In his free time, he reads, takes photos and plays football.

Speaker profile: Mike Brown, Uber, Southeast Asia


Mike Brown is the Regional General Manager of Uber in Southeast Asia. Prior to joining Uber, he held director-level roles in international & corporate development at Twitter and Facebook. Brown had also been a venture capitalist with Foundation Capital and Partech International. He is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

Speaker profile: Chang Chew Soon, Soft Space


Chang Chew Soon is the founder and CEO of Soft Space. Having more than 14 years of expertise in the field of providing innovative technology for the financial and payment industry, he gained experience from his leadership roles, managing businesses as a CTO, Country Manager and Founder of a technology company, Chilliwire Technologies which was eventually acquired by a larger group. Being a serial entrepreneur, his passion for technology has been the driving force behind Soft Space. Soft Space is currently deemed the leading mPOS provider in the South East Asia region, marking its presence in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand.

Moderator profile: Hazel Hassan, Cradle


Hazel has extensive experience in marketing communications, PR, media relations, government relations and events planning and management. She brings more than 20 years of well-rounded experience from both corporate and consultancy with exposure in the IT and telco industries. Hazel is also well-networked in both the business and technology fraternities and has the edge to be a good source of news. She held a regional APAC position at F-Secure Corporation’s APAC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur overseeing the marketing and communications strategies for countries such as India, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. She then left to be the senior marketing manager at Avira APAC HQ based in KL, looking after the Asia Pacific region and Japan.
